Nudity vs. Pornography

As I edited my speech from last week for posting, I realized it was way too long for a single post! This is the first part, about my work. I was introduced beautifully so I only needed to discuss my work itself. Some of these phrases will form part of my new artist statement.

“My artwork explores the nude figure. I find the human body to be a marvel, not just of engineering and design, but also of poetry and emotion. I am endlessly fascinated by what lies beneath, beneath clothes, beneath the layers of pain and beneath the masks we wear.

Nude Art is our history. It is our expression and our drive. It shows our growth as human beings and our evolution emotionally.

I mostly paint women. Strong, elegant and emotional, I capture different aspects of what it is to be a woman. I have been drawn to a difficult arena as censorship grows and fear over the nude body reaches fever pitch.

That is why I have dedicated myself to debunking myths about nude art. I want to show the world the beauty I see in the human body and share my firm belief that nudity is not threatening, it is not always sexual and it is here to stay.”

And for those of you following this blog, here is part of the history of this film, from its inception.

I’ve been asked several times by various naturists why I never followed up on filming “The Naked Place,” the fictional film that was in production in the documentary, “Naked in the 21st Century.”

Nudists have no product to turn to for their own entertainment, except for ClothesFree Nudecasts (informative, but not entertainment), documentaries made by their own (often BOOOORRRRRRING), and the cult movies of the 1960s like Monster at Camps Sunshine.

So I wrote “The Naked Place” in college at a time when I fell in love with the nudist philosophy and read all I could about it. The title came from an eleven year old girl at Lupin in Los Gatos, whose mother told me the story of how she used to say, “Let’s go to the Naked Place” every summer, especially in public. (!)

The storyline follows: Michelle Shimizu grows up at “Nature’s Paradise” located on the beautiful North Shore of Hawaii. At three stages of her life, we see her as a teenager falling in love with a haole boy named Dan. They break up a year later; she marries a conservative Asian American lawyer. Five years later, she comes back to try to save Nature’s Paradise from anti-nudists determined to shut them down.

She returns to the same campground in her adulthood as Nature’s Paradise is now a state park now open for camping. Her daughter has no idea she’s a nudist, but there reunited with Dan and his new family, the secret is out and both families have secrets related to being modern-day nudists.

I decided not to actually do this film for one particular reason. It’s a melodramatic romantic comedy written at a time in my life when I had still believed in romance.

Anyone who’s ever read my poetry will attest that I’m not a romantic guy. So I developed two screenplays as a result of what I went through in dealing with actors, old school naturists, reviewers of “Naked in the 21st Century.”

The comedy “The Screening Room” was the result, and it’s currently in pre-production. Inspired by South Park and American Pie, this comedy boasts fart jokes, crude humor and outrageous lampoons of public figures such as Congressman Mark Foley and “that self-righteous fear-mongering bitch” Nikki Craft.

Am I just conforming to the current market of youth-oriented films? You better believe I am. This is a business and anyone who doesn’t understand that better start studying it. A wild comedy, I feel, is the best way to express the anger and the frustration I feel at all the misinformed and ignorant public figures trying to shut down nude beaches left and right, and at the same time, make pointed commentaries at the nudist themselves for deviating from the original intent of naturism as spelled out by Adolf Koch, and then Kurt Barthel when he founded the American League of Physical Culture.
As I made my current revision of “The Screening Room” notable differences stood out. These are some of them:

1. “The Naked Place” features nudist teenagers who have a strong moral grounding, They are chaste, obedient to their parents and very well read on their nudist history. In “The Screening Room,” the teens participate fully clothed, are rebellious and only know as much about nudism as the internet can provide. This is far more realistic, and one has to look at how do teens rebel. Alex Keaton in the tv series “Family Ties” becomes a yuppie, much to the chagrin of his hippy parents. Similarly, my character of “Joy” is the promiscuous (but discreet) daughter of the resort owners. The main character “Micky” rebels against his dad by applying for a job at the resort where his dad once had membership when HE was a teenager.

2. Anti-nudist parents, cops and preachers are portrayed as shrewish, misinformed and very threatening people in “The Naked Place.” In the “Screening Room,” I asked myself, what if I did the exact opposite? The Congressman who shuts out all the minors from the resort is based on Lex Luthor, and he is more informed on nudist history than our hero Micky. And like Congressman Foley, manipulates the press into believing that children are actually at risk at these nudist facilities, despite their existence for 80 years in this country.

3. In the “Naked Place” the haole (Caucasians from the mainland) are the outsiders. In the “Screening Room” they are the majority and nudists of color are portrayed as “different.” This is very much how I feel much of the time at a nudist event and I DO get sick and tired of those few people asking me if I speak English.

4. There is very little humor in “The Naked Place.” The tragedy that befalls the camp is no laughing matter and it’s clear that a large portion of their lives were taken away from the nudists when Nature’s Paradise shut down. I felt it was time to be a little more light-hearted in my take on naturism since a nudist film should not take itself too seriously, but just serious enough for you to understand the characters. Quite often a person becomes a nudist because it simply feels great, not because they’re dying from cancer or were in therapy for sexual harassment and want to change their behavior.

So there you have it. Look for the Screening Room to come out in the near future. And if the Naked Place should get filmed, chances are it will be as a short and end up as a DVD extra. Nudists need good entertainment that does them justice. They don’t need soap operas, although that doesn’t sound like a bad idea . . .

American Nudist in Post Production

Micky's Summer Resort's sister film, "American Nudist" is currently in post. Here's a few thousand words on the film.

Taylor Kong (played by T. L. Young) is an artist, photographer and screenwriter working in the heart of Hollywood. Yearning for the simpler days when he used to run a nudist club in Hawaii, he feels as though he lost his muse. Lacking inspiration, he spends his spare time watching his old nudist films, while entertaining a parade of former and current models and lovers: a nude model (Nicole D’Angelo), a naturist colleague (Alicia Arden) and Playboy Cybergirl (Josie Goldberg.)

Then one day, he falls for an aspiring actress (Magda Marcella) whom he takes under his wing and takes her on a journey through the history of American Naturism.

Also starring Tiffany Bowyer ("Playback,") Simmin Yu, Leigh Davis, Arielle Brachfeld (both from "The Obsession," Sandy Colindres and Megan Cordero.

The Story of The Screening Room, or Micky's Summer Resort revolves around a club's decision to sell out and hold a pageant. However, the owners are thinking old school pageants which to this day are looked upon as "a lot of good clean family fun" by the older members of many resorts.

But that was then and this is now. And when modern "nudist" pageant girls start showing up, hilarity ensues.

The film Violent Blue was written by Gregory Hatanaka and T.L .Young, and it was filmed at the same time as the Screening Room, often using some cast members.

Now Rachel is directing Silent-But-Deadly’s first feature film: Why Am I In A Box? and, as if that wasn’t enough, Rachel also wrote and is starring in the film!

Nudism Benefits Autistic Boy

RECENTLY AN INSPIRING story appeared in the Forest Grove New Times, a newspaper serving the Pacific Northwest. It was a first-hand account by the mother of a six year old boy afflicted with autism who found rays of hope in an unlikely place: the local NUDE beach.

You read that correctly. Mother, husband, and son did not even know that the Rooster Rock Recreation Area in which they were hiking would wind up at a place where most patrons strip off, but that's exactly what happened. Her boy, who could not wait to get out of his uncomfortable clothing and into the refreshing water, had no hesitation in shucking his threads. (Those who know young people who have autism also know that, for many, their increased sensitivity to touch often makes clothing especially uncomfortable for them.)

As the story explains further, it did not take mom long to follow her son's example:

I have learned to appreciate the small moments of each day.... Moments of joy

I think for so many people in so many of life’s situations, it is the moments of joy that help us through the challenges. It is facing something terrifying, daunting, and tough that does indeed make the great things seem even more so.

That’s why I knew there was only one thing to do as I stood there on the beach watching my son splash with the biggest, most gleeful smile I have ever seen.

I tossed my swimsuit to my husband who stood there with a bemused – but not surprised – smile and I turned to join my son. Hand in hand, we ran off into the river, laughing all the way.

The real problem with family naturism

From talking to the young people at Olive Dell, both children and parents have remarked to me about how family unfriendly camps like Glen Eden and Deer Park has become. Much of the problem has to do with GE's lack of a youth program and how they allegedly discourage family membership. Deer Park has a youth program director but most of their kids have flown the coop. One child told me it was the most "unkid-liest place" he's ever visited. There's also a matter of a school tax that GE tries to avoid should they have children as members. Hap Hathaway himself told me this really is no excuse since they have to pay the school tax anyway.

Olive Dell on the other hand has an active "juniors" program, weekly activities and their kitchen staff is made up of their college members. So I see a real a correlation between youth involvement and the future of a naturist resort, particularly in attracting younger members.

Memo to the Parents Television Council: We're boycotting your boycotts

LHey, Parents Television Council: We hereby declare ourselves morally outraged by your moral outrage. We are red-alerting your system of constant red-alerts. We are boycotting your boycotts.

The fact is, this so-called “non-partisan education organization advocating responsible entertainment” seems more concerned with grabbing headlines than exercising responsibility itself. The group has often employed a tiresome alarmist attack strategy: It seems preoccupied, for instance, with unsaid profanity — yes, really, profanity that was not actually uttered, as in the title of the CBS sitcom $#*! My Dad Says and, a few years back, The CW’s sexy “OMFG” campaign for Gossip Girl. It spends a lot of time policing the content of shows meant to provoke — and meant, by the way, to be aimed at adults — like perpetual offender Family Guy. You think an episode including orgies and bestiality wasn’t basically meant to upset you, PTC?

But the council has never made its true mission clearer than when it spoke out against last week’s much-debated GQ photo shoot featuring three Glee stars, two of them in very little clothing. The group seems more interested in getting in on any hot topic trending online than in fulfilling its stated mission. Even though the debate had nothing to do with actual television content, and even less to do with media aimed at kids (GQ is for grown men, guys!), they hijacked the debate with their hysterical assertions that the shoot “borders on pedophilia.” I myself argued against the photos’ cheap, sexist set-up (crotch shots, lollipops, and underwear for Lea Michele and Dianna Agron; sweaters and ties — not to mention pants — for Cory Monteith). And I resented the way the PTC derailed the discussion, making it easy to scoff away any criticism of the pictorial as crazy talk of the same ilk. Of course it’s not pedophilia — Michele and Agron are both in their 20s — but it is misogynist trash that goes against the very empowerment Glee preaches. The PTC, however, torpedoed the entire debate.

The group’s insistence on being ludicrous is too bad, really, because a reasonable TV watchdog group could do some good. With more content on television than ever — and the medium’s ever-increasing pervasiveness in our lives — there’s nothing wrong with holding networks accountable for their actions. And surely parents would appreciate some measured guidance in finding the best family programming out there. (Not all high school shows and cartoons are meant for young audiences, after all.) The PTC has even waged some rational campaigns on occasion — for instance, a report last year pointing out the brutal violence against women on prime-time crime shows. Unfortunately, such constructive outrage gets lost in the group’s too-frequent ridiculous dramatics.

With the PTC losing funding and power — as The New York Times reports, the group that once scored record-setting Federal Communications Commission fines against broadcasters didn’t make a dent this fall in $#*! My Dad Says‘ ad revenue — could it be time for a truly nonpartisan education organization that would advocate responsibly for responsible entertainment? Until then, we’ll be tuning out the outrage.

Here's a thousand words on our last shoot. We shot some interviews of members of AAFNR, a family nudist non-landed club. Unfortunately, members of Vida Nuda West declined to appear.

Since we are nearing the end of our shoot, we really have no representation from young nudist couples. The film makes no mention of them anyway, so in a way, they do not exist. Perhaps this is just as well. If no one speaks out, no one will ever know, and if the rest of America thinks that nudists are old fat people, mostly men who drag their kids along to events, then there's nothing I can do about that.

Why do I make nudist films? Here are the many reasons why. This has been my career in a nutshell and nothing has really changed. The Screening Room is my last nudist film and I'll be moving on to more sci-fi and dark comedy. The Screening Room was a great springboard for these types of films. Anyway, onward . . .

I love being a nudist filmmaker, that is, writing screenplays set in nudist resorts with a naturist theme because I love being ostracized by my colleagues on every professional level and being considered a freak by every self-respecting actress who auditions for me.

I love being a nudist filmmaker because I love calling Nikki Craft a paranoid, fearmongering bitch and expect no repercusssions because of the obscurity of my work.

I love being a nudist filmmaker because I love communicating with nudist resort owners who think an active nudist will portray his own community as though they were a bunch of tree hugging hippies with no grip on reality.

I love being a nudist filmmaker because I love to delude myself into believing that naturism will change the world because so many cases of civil rights were won by middle-aged and elderly white guys sitting around in their lawn chairs.

I love being a nudist because I love having every career path cut short because the market for such photographic images, videos and film is considered the domain of sex offenders.

I love being a nudist filmmaker because I get to present censored images of nudists in order to make the point that the human body is beautiful. I love to feature teenage characters fully clothed and have them talk about getting naked because I can then deny that the perverts in the audience are getting a major boner from hearing this "naughty talk".

I love being a nudist filmmaker because I love getting banned from Hawaii nudist clubs for calling their teenage member a skanky little slutbag, and then being accused of being jealous of that skanky little slutbag.

I love being a nudist filmmaker because I love promoting a philosophy that no one can remember who founded, and no one can name a famous member of.

I love being a nudist filmmaker because it's so exciting to be involved in something that fundamentalist Christians are offended by, but the Nazis fully approved of (up to a certain point, anyway - and they only shut them down for political reasons.)

And most of all, I love being a nudist filmmaker because I love to make the same pro-nudism argument about the positive benefits of nudism EVERY SINGLE TIME FOR OVER TWENTY YEARS TO FELLOW WRITERS who think nudism went out with the hippies.

The Real Joy Sarkin

Joy Sarkin, the lead female character in the Screening Room, is obviously an offshoot of Kelly Deerdale (short film: Kelly Deerdale, Naturist.) She is the club resort owner's daughter and admittedly I have never met nudist club owner's children.

Until today.

Olive Dell Ranch is run by second generation naturists, and I only spent a few seconds talking to her during a pool volleyball game. In those few seconds, I suddenly felt like apologizing to her for the way I portray Joy in my film.

This was a girl with a lot of self confidence, a good head on her shoulders and very mature. I could tell that just from a strong first impression.

In contrast, the local nudist girl who became the basis of Kelly Deerdale was arrogant, selfish and sexually irresponsible. She was flaunting herself while at nudist functions and generally belittling her peers, despite only being a year older than they were.

I used to blame it on her parents. Certainly the short film showed that, though I liked her dad, and respected his nudist philosophy. I personally never blamed him.

Since today, I now understand that she has to be held accountable for her behavior. Children know what it right and what is wrong. There is no excuse for the things rumored of her, all of which were true. My cousin is no liar, and I trust what he said.

Kelly (not her real name) should be ashamed of herself. I only wish she had the Olive Dell girls to hang with. They would have set her straight. But even then, she still has to think for herself and make better decisions. Her behavior was unbecoming of a nudist, and as a nudist she should have known better. You can't claim she simply didn't know what a nudist was about. The information was out there.

Nudists are supposed to be examples, innovators, free thinkers and influential ones at that. And it all starts when you're young. Some young nudists grow up to run nudist resorts. Others do not. Very few are really messed up.

Kelly wasn't the child of a resort owner or even a non-landed club owner.

Joy Sarkin is, and at this writing, it may be hard for a nudist to believe that a resort owner's daughter would behave the way she would. But I think it's credible. And the story is written and now must be told.

Some random but insightful comments from Skinbook

Thank God (or Buddha) for social networking. I asked fellow naturists if implied nudity would be a dealbreaker when watching a naturist film. Especially when average older folk are nude in full frontal shots but many of the young people are not.

Here is what they said:

Your movie sounds really interesting though. I'd love to see it whenever it is done.

Dario Western "You could have gone to some of the family nudist places and asked if there were any teens who were willing to be featured in the film instead of getting textile actors. They would have probably been more than happy to feature in the movie.

Nude children and teens have been featured in some films like "The Blue Lagoon", "The Boys Of St. Vincents", "Educating Julie", "Puberty Blues"."

Unfortunately in this country, soliciting teen talent for a nudist film is out of the question. Those films you mentioned were done decades ago, and even Brooke Shields said on the Blue Lagoon commentary that they could not have made that movie nowadays.

When I asked for talent on the nudist resort.org site, they freaked when they assumed I wanted to hire teenagers. They had no idea that movies and tv shows (other than Disney) hire 18 year old actors to play younger for movies of this genre. And when I said my lead character had a "gift," I can only guess what they thought I meant.

Also, there are no scenes featuring teenage characters nude. It's a directorial choice. Films need conflict and what is more obvious a conflict than having a clothed teenager in a nudist setting. At this writing, we've edited the first 20 minutes and it does feel like a "behind the scenes" of a nudist resort type of film. We can definitely use more nudity.

Is there some legal consideration about nudity for films representing someone to be under the age of 18 even thought the actor were 18 or older? I've seen children filmed nude in major films - not often, but it happens.

Yes, being coy about nudity detracts from the wholesomeness of nudity. It makes it seem "naughty" and usually actually makes the situation somewhat salacious.

I suppose that big name filmmakers can get more cooperation from the cast. I've often thought that, when filming nude scenes, the director and crew - at least the director - could be nude too - and in a naturist film - the director should make sure that he is in the film too - a la Hitchcock - fully nude.

Actually, there is no law about depicting teens nude if the actors are 18. It was a directorial choice, as well as a socio/political statement.

Yes, but she claimed that she didn't know which roles would be full frontal, which ones would be topless only, and which would be implied. In this town, nudity can hurt an actresses career. And they are all paranoid.

I write great roles and many actresses are attracted to the roles and will try to scam you into giving it to them, and allowing them to film it with implied nudity.

The Opening Scene

"Baby, Baby, I love the way you love me.
Your tongue on my skin drives me insane.
How I long for your candy kisses in the summer rain.
Your lips so tender, with me you lie.
The day you leave me is the day I die."

This poem opens my film, "The Screening Room." My first feature under my own direction and my own script, untouched by other producers.

The significance of this poem is that I blatantly ripped it off, okay -- freely adapted it from a girl who stood me up on Valentine's Day. Does she deserve this immortality. Of course not.

But those four days, prior to that loss, and it's my loss, not hers . . . get to that in a minute.

Those four days were filled with hope and excitement, such feelings I have never experienced before and haven't since. Sure, I've had love affairs since, but unheard melodies are sweeter and the possibility of what might have been, had I not f*cked it all up, is so much more exciting. After all, her POETRY OPENS THE FRICKIN' MOVIE.

How's that for impact! This "poet" (and I use the term loosely, she wasn't THAT good) didn't give two sh*ts about me, and probably has forgotten all about me by now, left me a poem that OPENS MY FRICKIN' MOVIE!!!

Still it is my adaptation and my own work based on hers. And I do feel loss on my part. After all, she inspired me with all of her stories of the club scene in Seattle and minor hints of love affairs too racy to include here. She is by definition my muse, or was my muse. And no one, not your muse, no one has the right to deny you the feelings you first felt upon meeting her.

And when it comes down to it. I didn't know this girl, this amateur poet. I fell in love with my image of who I believed she was. So in a very real sense, it's more my work than hers. I'm sure she'll never see it. Too bad. I feel too that this will be my loss. She was there at the beginning, the turning point of my professional career, and she will not be there to share in its rewards.

Implied nudity in a nudist film

Casting has begun for the Pageant Scene in the Screening Room. As some of you actors reading this may know, for some odd reason our IMDB listing has been removed.

Needless to say, our people are looking into this.

Now you naturists following this blog are wondering, "What's a beauty pageant doing in a nudist movie?" Nudism is about body acceptance. We should accept all body types.

Trust me, that's exactly what the scene is about . . . sort of.

My beliefs in nudism is more old school, common to Germany in the turn of the century. They believed in Lebensreform or Life Reform, which called for a change in just about everything from religion to marriange to social mores. Can we honestly say that modern day naturists feel the same way?

"Stories are meant to grow and develop and leave the original source behind. Jokes aside, I can see that Kelly Deerdale, as a character and as a person, was growing, learning, developing, becoming the stable adult that she would become, and having a naturist background would only help her, not hinder her.

"But of course, this is an assumption. Maybe she isn't happily married, as my film states in the final caption. Very few people are, but I have a good instinct when it comes to people. I believe she ended up more stable and more mentally, physically and sexually healthier than I ever did.

Reintroduce a Healthy Naturist Revolution

Healthy eating and exercise, along with mental and spiritual health,
were essential to early naturist practice. What happened? It’s as if
when people took off their clothes they forgot why. Originally, it was
for physical and mental health. It’s time to bring healthy living back
to naturism.

It’s wrong that naturists just laze around a pool or on a beach in the
sun to the exclusion of swimming and freehiking and nude gardening and
similar healthy activities. Naturism is not just sunbathing – far from
it.

It’s wrong that naturists eat such unhealthy foods. A restaurant at a
resort should serve much more than burgers and fries and sugar-crammed
sodas. Naturists are healthy eaters.

It’s wrong that naturists gather together to drink and smoke as if
getting naked somehow encourages these obviously unhealthy practices.
On the contrary, naturism discourages these nasty habits.

It's wrong that naturists neglect mental and spiritual stimulation,
and hide from others. Demonstrating that they are different, not
"sheeple", by stepping outside the constraints of society and culture,
and rejecting the negative effects of "textilism" and sexual
perversion, naturists should be seekers after all truth and leaders
and teachers and missionaries, not fearful mental pigmies.

Perhaps “nudists” are okay with an unhealthy lifestyle, but not
“naturists”. By definition, naturists are physically active, eat
healthy food, avoid unhealthy habits, seek mental and spiritual
advancement, and encourage others to understand so they also live in
true health. It’s time for everyone to become "true" naturists.

American Nudist: Behind the Scenes

Pre-production has begun for a concurrent film, "Real American Nudist" while Screening Room is nearing post.

CREATING A CHARACTER

Usually when a writer creates a character, he bases it on someone from his life. Usually someone who has had a major impact on him or her.

I did something totally different for American Nudist, something I never thought I'd do.

When I was in 26, a girl I'll call "Jenny" here stood me up on Valentine's day. It left me traumatized, emotionally devastated and scarred for the rest of my life. I never truly recovered.

Jenny inspired no less than 12 "F*ck You Bitch" poems, one of which got me temporarily banned from Borders.

The experience inspired an award winning play and I even incorporated it into my sci-fi novel.

But enough was enough.

I was instructed to create a past love affair for my main character, Taylor Kong. But no woman from my past had any real impact on me. Especially from Hawaii, which I used to call the hotbed of celibacy.

So what did I do? I asked myself, What if Jenny didn't stand me up? What if we had met that night and we had this wild, animalistic love affair which inspired me to create more positive plays and films. What if loving her gave me more insight to love and relationships right then and there? Instead of waiting years to find out what I'd been doing wrong, and not being able to do anything about it.

What if Jenny were my muse?

So a character was born. This Jenny Chan is nothing like any local girl I've ever met. She's smart, insightful, very spiritual and mature. She knows herself and can see through the hypocrisies of the naturist lifestyle, when Taylor himself could not.

She even gets to the front door of the nudist party before she bails, not because she doesn't believe in it, but because she sees naturism as a young person's game, and when she doesn't get that, she makes her opinion known.

She inspires Taylor, though she hurts him at the same time. But one lesson Taylor will never learn as I had, 'tis better to love and lost than to never have loved at all.'

The real "Jenny" never taught me anything except how to hate. To be honest, she was an immature slut and I wasted years envying her for her sexual prowess. The fictional Jenny forced me to recreate myself in a way that the real Jenny did not.

The real "Jenny" admitted she didn't believe in love. The fictional Jenny understands and can only give love, but not irrationally.

The real "Jenny" and every other girl from my hometown will probably never read this. That's just as well. I don't want to pay her any royalties, but then again, she didn't create the character.

I did.

And I credit those who create something that is timeless and beautiful, not those who try to destroy it.

No Nudity in Manoa Valley Theater's production of "Hair"

This is reprinted from their Audition notice:

nudity: The script does not stipulate the use of nudity and the MVT production will be produced without nudity. Nudity is not integral to the "telling of the story" in Hair.

I come from Hawaii, and I feel ashamed for this. Lack of the nude scene in Hair is an insult to the original artists and though I've been told by at least one director that Hair has nothing to do with the nudist movement, I agree in part. Act One where the nude scene is placed is not consistent with the nudist ideals.

Act Two however, particularly within the context of the song, "Walking in Space" is very consistent, and though I do not credit the hippies with anything related to nudism, I remind them of this lyric:

"How dare they try to end this beauty. How dare they try to end this beauty."

This is all I will say on the matter. I have lost all faith in the artists in Hawaii at this point. Quite frankly their conservative mindset has, then and now, made me sick to my stomach.

The Naked Mile

Truth to tell, American Pie: The Naked Mile is not a nudist film, nor does it pretend to be. Still, the Naked Mile is considered a real nudist event, so I thought I say a few words about this movie here.

It's a very cliched movie with forced gross out humor, but the one thing I noticed was how natural the Naked Mile scenes were. College kids having fun, despite the script trying (and failing) to "sex it up."

There was only one guy with a keg of beer. The stripping scenes were matter-of-fact and the sexiness of it wasn't very natural.

Oddly enough, it was the underwear dance party that had any sex appeal at all in the whole film.

But in the spirit of nudism, the fifty-something extras did a great job in capturing this event. Some of them, from what I gather in the bts documenatary went totally nude. Most of the men wore socks and at least one girl wore pasties. All three main college girls (the female leads) went topless, which is something I have yet to film. So kudos to them.

The real problems with nudism

I have often said that nudists are so busy fighting problems that don’t exist (i.e. public misconceptions, child predators, people with bad hygiene) that they often neglect problems that do exist. The following letter from my internet friend, Dario Western, best describes this problem. I share this on my filmmaking blog to show my potential audience a brief glimpse into the actual lifestyle and the conflicts therein. It’s been edited for space.

“Youth is very much into nudism but at their own pace and comfort zone. I operate a male retreat for nudists in the Sunshine Coast hinterland and the young guys who come here ask for an exclusive use for the day which is fine by me. They want to be on their own with people of their own age group which is fair enough.

“At the other end of the scale are the seniors and neither group have anything in common apart from nudism. In the middle you seem to have the 'part time ' nudists - these are the nudists who get naked once in a while. Then we have the fitness guys who take great pride in their bodies and fitness and they are great visitors.

“Unfortunately I have to say that the older community are the most difficult. They expect everything for free – “why do we have to pay - we're also nudists!”.

“When we explain that advertising, upkeep such as chlorine, mower fuel, outdoor furniture costs money, they seem to think that that should be provided by others and not them! Our day visitors are by donation and most older folk wait until I am out of the way and they depart so they do not have to donate!

“One of the worst examples was one grossly overweight guy who simply flopped down into our outdoor chairs - breaking two and then landed on our lounger beds and broke two of those. When the other guys around the pool said to this guy to be more careful he merely told them to “mind their own f—business,” and then flopped into the pool causing a tidal wave that swamped everyone around the pool. He laughed and said, “get over it” and promptly left - with no donation!

“Primarily, it is this attitude of some that nudists can do anything and go anywhere irrespective of the feelings of others that I think [it’s] causing [a] general lack of new nudists coming to venues.”

Ed. note: I do have to agree with him regarding the overweight "gentlemen." Most of my overweight friends are friendly and considerate of others and do not go around breaking furniture or drenching other pool users with an impromptu cannonball dive.

My Most Beautiful Nudist Experiences

People say that I'm negative in my naturist work, and that the only nudist stories that I've written are saturated with anger and frustration. This film contains many of those experiences.

But I wouldn't have stayed in the world of naturism (such as it is in Los Angeles) if I did not experience moments of true beauty. Moments that reveal the true nature of people, and what life could be like if we did not live under the metaphorical umbrella of guilt and shame.

So I present five stories of things I've seen in the nudist world that made me realize that nudity was something that is beautiful, and that it is a world to be cherished.

1. At Rawhide Ranch, (Laguna Del Sol) A little black girl in a swimming pool playing with a white Barbie doll. Her playmate was white, about the same age as her. Both were eight, I believe. Only the white girl was playing with a black Barbie doll. And the two of them would have the two Barbies swimming together. The girl's name was Sparkle. I didn't want to disturb them. That moment was too precious.

2. I was 18 when I first went to Lupin. The first nudist family I met had three or four children. It was the mom who told me a story about how her 11 year old would call Lupin Naturist Club, the "Naked Place." That's how I came up with the title. This moment happened when I first entered the hot tub to see, for the first time in my life, a pre-adolescent girl nude. And she actually had pubic hair. I was shocked at first until I realized that I had pubes at age 11. But I just never saw anyone else's, least of all a girls'. It embarrassed me that though I was an honors' student but didn't know this simple fact.

I'll never forget her eyes, behaving like a typical teenager checking out the boys. But in this case, surrounded by her family, she was in a safe environment, and those feelings were natural. And I remembered how she smiled at me, very likely because she probably never saw an Asian man in a nudist resort before. But I can still recall the changes in her body as she was on the cusp of womanhood. It made me realize how fragile such a change was. And it was then did I realize that such beauty should never be violated.

3. At Rawhide, I played pool with a teenager named Tiffany. We both kept our towels around our waist. After a while, I forgot we didn't have clothes on. We were simply two youths playing pool. It's not that a guy wouldn't notice a girl's bare breasts, but body parts become part of your costume, in a sense.

4. At the Hawaii Skinnydippers, I had the pleasure of welcoming our first young couple. The woman, Kim, had a gorgeous figure, and this was the only time I actually felt excited about seeing a nudist in the nude. I wasn't able to play volleyball because of some injury, I think, so I just watched the game. Seeing her body move was simply poetry in motion.

5. At the Hawaii Kai Nudist Party in the year 2000. I was pretty jaded by then, and the experience became the basis for my short film, "Kelly Deerdale." Well, there was a moment when "Kelly" (aged 12) was in the changing room, and a beautiful Asian woman disrobed. Kelly looked at her as though she had just seen a goddess. Her face lit up and she smiled. I assumed the only Asian American women in her life were her teachers or her neighbors, and I'm sure, as naturist children do, she wondered how these darker, golden hued women looked like in the nude. It's only natural. So here she was, in all her glory. And for me to see this through her eyes was, not to sound too corny, just magical.

I remember a poll I once read in a naturist magazine asking about one's attitudes regarding children and nudity.

One of the choices was "the human body is disgusting. Children shouldn't see it."

I actually laughed out loud when I read that. Little did I know that there were people who actually felt that way. But if anyone could see the look on Kelly's face, one would be convinced that nudity can be a positive effect on a child's well being. It's all in the context.

These are moments that have inspired poetry and my early screenplays, but will not be in my current work. I'm sure my readers will understand why. Like Sally Mann's work proved, childhood innocence no longer communicates.

It's sad but it's the state of the world, and probably always has been. But had it not been for moments like these, I wouldn't have stayed in the naturist world for as long as I have. Keep in mind, nudists are not artists. Most of the ones I've met have no concept of art. The current artists who photograph nudes today are not nudists themselves, though their subjects may be.

I hope this situation changes because we need more filmmakers like Jan Gay and less Russ Meyers. And admittedly all of my beautiful moments involve nude girls. I simply think they are more beautiful than us men. But I hope other women can share their beautiful experiences too.

I encourage readers of this blog to contribute their "Naked Memories." And before anyone asks, none of these stories are actually filmable, not even the Barbie story, so it will not appear in the Screening Room.

Diary of a Teenage Nudist

One of my major influences in writing the Screening Room was the Brit documentary, "Diary of a Teenage Nudist" a well made, thought provoking film much maligned by naturists and non-naturists alike, and underrated by the community in general.

Amanda is one of the teens encountered by our protagonist, and when she turned fifteen, she started participating fully clothed. There is no doubt she still calls herself a nudist, and she states there have been many times when she would feel more comfortable nude, but being the only teenager made her feel very self conscious.

Most teens wonder why everyone is looking at them, because at that young age, they wouldn't believe anyone would be interested. This only turns them off to the lifestyle, and without proper education about the history of naturism and the legacy of the Wandervogel and the Natural Healing Movement, they would not feel inclined to return.

I do not own the above image, and if there are any complaints by the BBC, I will take it down. I regret I have to crop it, but I'm not familiar with the rules here on his blogspot.

Who Watches the Screening Room?

I've been noticing lately that the national naturist groups and most family naturist groups have paid no attention to this film. On the other hand, two naturist friendly polyamory groups have already lent their locations to the production of this film, at a very low cost.

This includes Live the Dream and the Southern California Polyamory Meetup, particularly Tom Nadeau who owns Yogaworks. And also, LANG, which is a homosexual naturist group, in a world that has in the past discriminated against gay naturists, this group has been more than generous.

They will definitely get a plug in the credits. But CFI, members of the Naturist Action Committee, Pandora, Dana Lange have just disappeared. Hopefully one or more will follow up. But I like to think there's some solidarity here.

Already, San Onofre has been threatened. How many nude beaches or clubs are we going to lose?

I hope the situation changes.

A Funny Thing Happened During the Course of Filming

An interesting thing happened while filming my nudist feature, "The Screening Room." On the one day we had nudists on set, none of the young people (anyone under the age of 40) would go nude, nor would they walk around with towels on to imply nudity.

As it stands there are no nude scenes featuring any women under the age of 40, and only one scene with a 25 year old man nude from behind.

Though distribution and production isn't happy with this, the funny thing is . . . it works.

The story revolves around Micky Littleton, aged 16 who is a nudist geek. He believes in the ideals of nudism and is against his resort wanting to hold a beauty pageant. So what would shock and offend this nudist? Not to mention the other teen nudists?

What else but girls in bikinis? Hot girls who won't take it off to participate, not even in the swimming pool where bathing suits usually aren't allowed. Even teen nudists who participate fully clothed will be offended because here are hot girls with bodies they envy are not willing to go native. A bit hypocritical, but realistic, wouldn't you agree?

Even the nudists in the audience will be shocked, offended, disheartened, disappointed, until the situation turns around at the end. That is the essence of good drama.

So I want to put it out there to my readers. Do you think a nudist film will work with no one under 40 going nude, at least until the very end? Or what about not at all, like the Simple Life? Wouldn't that make a stronger statement about the state of American Nudism?

San Onofre needs your help

Long story short, they will be fining people for going nude at San Onofre beginning this week. A traditionally clothing optional beach that has been so for over 30 years.

The ignorance of these outsiders is overwhelming. Where were they thirty years ago? Nobody shuts down the church when their priests were molesting altar boys.

Kelly Deerdale opens at the Laemmle Grande

Kelly Deerdale, Naturist debuted last night to a packed house at the Laemmle Grande in downtown Los Angeles. The short film precedes the main feature "Orgies and the Meaning of Life." The film's star Andromeda Ambard along with executive producer Clinton H. Wallace were in attendance, along with celebrities including Kerri Kasem, Alicia Arden, Andrea Harrison and Tonya Kay from the latter film.

Also in attendance from "Kelly Deerdale, Naturist" was actor Lu Johnson, director Ramzi Abed, and writer/actor T. L. Young.

Both Kelly Deerdale and the Screening Room were inspired by the same incident that Young witnessed at his nudist club back home in Hawaii.

The Screening Room was partially inspired by an incident at the Hawaii Naturist Society. This incident became the basis of a short story which became a separate short film. And that film is . .

Kelly Deerdale, Naturist, based on T.L. Young's short story from the now defunct American Nudist website follows a young poet visiting his nudist club back home in Mililani, Hawaii. There he meets a teenage girl, whose behavior forces him to examine the realities of modern-day nudism.

This film precedes our main feature, "Orgies and the Meaning of Life" opens at the Laemmle Grande theater in downtown Los Angeles. Please join me for the movie, a Q&A with cast and crew, and then drinks at the Library Bar afterwards.

If you can't make Friday, I will also be doing a Q&A after the Saturday 7:10 PM show.

Magda Marcella plays "Joy," the female lead

Magda: So I got a part in this film.... It's set in a nudist resort and my character is kind of a rebel.
Friend: Wait, how can you be a nudist AND a rebel?
Magda: Well... I wear clothes.

Magda Marcella is an alumni of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Born in Germany to Polish parents, she spent most of her childhood in Austin,Texas, but has lived in many other countries. She credits her stay in Moscow, Russia for her interest in acting. An avid skier, she also enjoys painting and hiking in her spare time. Magda is a member of Knockouts For Girls, a non-profit organization geared toward empowering young women in need.

But in the meantime, I wanted to report that we finished Day 12 of the Screening Room.

Kara Michelle Hyatt who plays Britney is officially picture wrapped. (There is a matter of a pickup shot, but that doesn't count.)

As for nudity, it's been pretty conservative so far. A topless woman here, a nude man walking by there. But there will be more. It won't be pretty in the beginning and it's likely the swimming pool scenes will have only implied nudity. Makes more of an impact that way.

For now, I'm open to suggestions about the title. The Screening Room doesn't say "nudist film." And putting the work "Naked" in it only makes it sound like a porn.

It's a comedy, so it should sound like one. Suggestions anyone?

Nudist Scenes coming up in August

My nudist comedy is now in Day 11 of production. We are ready to prepare for the nudist segments.

For those of you just joining us, "The Screening Room" is a satire making fun of anti-nudist and sell-outs. Congressman Foley and the Ponderosa Sun Club, respectively are shining examples of these. I also take potshots at Ann Coulter, Michelle Malkin and Bristol Palin.

We are filming in Los Angeles, and we aim to break the stereotype of nudists being old, out of shape or unattractive. I've been a nudist for a decade and once in a while I do run into attractive people. Nudist with healthy bodies, not plastic ones.

So if this is you, we would love to have your involvement. We can even talk about co-producers' credits as well.

We want to show the world that there are beautiful people in nudism. Scenes involve playing ping pong and participating in a disastrous beauty pageant and swimming. This is your chance to represent the nudist community.

This film has distribution and a theatrical screening is planned, in addition to a film festival strategy.

Production moves along

Ramzi Abed (The Devil's Muse) has been attached as director of photography. While waiting on cast bios, I will now announce the cast.

Michael Soulema plays the lead role of Micky, a Catholic High School Student hired to be a screener at a nudist resort. Model/Actress Amanda Banoub plays the girl of his dreams, who happens to be the owner's daughter.

Rounding out the cast is Kara Michelle Hyatt who plays Britney, whose mom is grooming her to be just like her namesake, 'but a lot less skanky.'

Ms. Hyatt co-stars in the recent film, "The 18-Year-Old Virgin."

Cerina Da Graca and Michael Lehr also star.

What about nudity?

The film is set in a nudist resort, right? So does that mean, everybody gets naked ???

I guess the question was inevitable, and I didn't try to avoid the issue. The truth is as a naturist myself, I forget that most people are not in the know. Go skinny dipping for an hour or two, and you forget you don't have a bathing suit on. It happens.

This film revolves around teenagers in a nudist environment. And teenagers, as a sweeping generalization, participate fully clothed. The reasons are varied, but most people think it's because they are self-conscious. There are other theories, which I may or may not go into.

After all, we're making a movie here, not starting a philosophy chatroom. The film addresses the subject, and it should stay in the film, not here in the production news. That doesn't mean there won't be any nudity at all. There are adult characters and a plot point which even a non-nudist won't be disappointed by.

So expect to see photos being uploaded, but these actors do not appear nude. The ones who do, will not be posted here . . . at least not yet, and not uncensored. I think there are rules about that here on Blogger.

Principal Photography Begins

Production began by LAX and in Burbank. Most of the Special Effects shots have been done, though there are pickups to do. On this day, for a half day shoot taking place in "Tad's Living Room," the principal cast united for the first time.

Michael Soulema is attached to play the lead role of Micky Littleton, the boy with a "gift."

Rounding out the cast is Cerina DaGraca, Kara Michelle Hyatt, Michael Lehr and Melanie Faith. Photos will be uploaded soon.

Production plans to first film all the scenes in locations seen only once. Indie films tend to double up on locations, but this shouldn't be done if we want the illusion of Willow Valley having been a four star resort on a bit of a decline.

At this time, there are plans to do behind the scenes interviews for a documentary following Naked in the 21st Century. This will run concurrently with this production.

This is not your Grandpa's Naturist Film

As of 12/21/08 half of the special effects shots are done. A decapitation, a dominatrix, blood, entrails and dentures falling into a teenage girl's cleavage are not exactly elements you'd normally find in a movie set in a nudist resort.

But given the state of modern American nudism, it should surprise no one. Only two more sequences in SPFX and principal photography can begin. Production is still looking for office spaces and swimming pools to shoot in.

Attached is a photo of one of our actresses, Cerina De Graca. The rest of the cast will be announced soon.

MARKETING STRATEGY: The Screening Room is currently scheduled to be released in 2009. Theatrical run is available and sales agents for cable television and foreign sales have already shown interest. Production plans to start a promotional tour through naturist regional gatherings and events which are held across the country. There are currently over 250 such resorts and businesses in the United States alone.

PROJECT COMPARISONS: The Screening Room combines two film traditions, the teen comedy (i.e. “American Pie” and “Not Another Teen Movie”) with the nudist films of the 1960s, (“Monster at Camp Sunshine” and “Garden of Eden”) updated with a modern sensibility. There is a science fiction element which brings about a motif of dark comedy.

Day 0.0. Filming commenced at the InArtMedia studio in Culver City. Because these are second unit shots and are unique to the plot, the cast and content of these scenes will not be posted. Overall, everything went well.

In addition to these shots, we will see three teens in a chatroom reacting to the lead character, Micky’s news, that he works in a nudist resort. I was unable to shoot the first chatroom scene, as the actress was unavailable.

Day 0.1, principal cast members showed to perform their SPFX scenes, but we only filmed Alicia Arden and Kara Michelle Hyatt as Tiffany and Britney. Actress Kimmarie Johnson who is playing the resort owner, could not attend to participate in a preliminary reading.

No pickups, unless Alicia is available to be a severed head. I don't know if we have that technology. I was thinking of covering her in a white blanket, but you can't control fake blood like that.

Michael Lehr is cast as Tad, the Asian American jokester. Cerina DeGraca is cast as Janey and has shot some stills for us to be used in the storyline.

The beheading scene looks great, better than we thought.

Now the drawbacks. The tenant in charge of the space is overcharging and though I’d like to return to do the fight scene, chances are we will not. There are filming ordinances in West Hollywood anyway, and we don’t want to raise the noise level.
